Denis Butkus


Denis is an actor, director, teacher, producer, and filmmaker.  Currently, he’s developing an ongoing film/video installation project entitled Artists in Action with Gratiis Productions, which explores the artist’s power to expose injustices throughout the world with their work. In addition, as an Associate Artist with Theater Mitu, he will be touring the company’s production of Juárez: A Documentary Mythology to Z Space in San Francisco, California in July 2015.  The production premiered in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico and El Paso, Texas.  It has played runs at Rattlestick Playwrights Theater in New York City; The Arts Center at New York University’s Abu Dhabi Campus; Mansion in Beirut, Lebanon; Los Angeles Theater Center’s Enuentro Festival.  Denis also appeared in the company’s world premiere productions of HAMLET/UR- Hamlet and A Dream Play in Abu Dhabi, UAE. He has taught and participated in Theater Mitu’s Artist Intensives at Visthar Center for Peace and Justice in Bangalore, India and in Kyoto, Osaka, and Tokyo, Japan. 


As a faculty member at the Einhorn School of Performing Arts at Primary Stages, Denis has led workshops and master classes, while designing and implementing syllabi for both individual and group acting courses.  As an Artistic Associate with the award winning Rising Phoenix Repertory and a former Literary Manager for Rattlestick Playwrights Theater, Denis has produced and developed over 100 readings, workshops, and productions with established and emerging contemporary playwrights. 


As an actor he appeared professionally on Broadway in The Caine Mutiny Court Martial and at Lincoln Center Theater in the Tony Award winning production of Tom Stoppard’s The Coast of Utopia.  Off-Broadway he appeared in five productions of Shakespeare at Theatre for a New Audience:  Othello, Measure for Measure, Macbeth, Taming of The Shrew, and Much Ado About Nothing.  The Revenger’s Tragedy with Red Bull; Walking Down Broadway and The Skin Game at The Mint; St. Crispin’s Day and Massacre (sing to your children) at Rattlestick Playwrights Theater.  With Rising Phoenix Repertory he performed in The Sibling Plays, Gift, The Ride, Three Sisters, Don’t Pet the Zookeeper, Birthday, Here I Lie, and Extraordinary Things. Internationally he appeared in the Austrian premiere of Old Wicked Songs at The English Theatre of Vienna.  On film his work can be seen in Gods Behaving Badly, Frank the Bastard, and A Quintet. 


Denis has a BFA from The Juilliard School of Drama and is a MA candidate at NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study where he was awarded the Newington-Cropsey Fellowship and expects to graduate in January of 2016.
